Do-It-Yourself: Garage Floor Coating

When coating garage floors, you will need several materials and protective clothing such as the following: rubber gloves; working goggles; scrub sponge or brush; a broad, flat, paintbrush; tin bucket; respirator with filters; paint roller (medium size); extension handle for paint roller; paint tray; concrete degreaser, concrete sealer, electric fan.

STEP 1: Before coating garage floors, don on your safety and protective gear of eye goggles and rubber gloves and respirator mask with filters.  In coating garage floors, you may have to deal with hazardous chemicals from coating garage floor that are harmful to your eyes and your skin or chemicals that are not safe to breath in.

STEP 2: Dirt, oil and grease prevent the sealer from sticking to your floor garage and coating garage floor properly.  The next thing to when before coating garage floor is to prepare the surface for the coating garage floor.  When coating garage floor, scrub and clean the concrete with any long-standing dirt, oil or grease using the scrub sponge or brush and degreaser in order of the coating garage floor to apply properly.  For more stubborn stains, let the degreaser solution soak through the stain for 20-30 minutes or as according to degreaser instruction. (Please see separate articles for home-made degreaser).  After soaking rinse thoroughly with clean water using a water hose.  More than one application may be needed for bigger oil or grease stains or spilled paints.

STEP 3: Once the concrete floor garage is dry, coating garage floor may now proceed and the coating garage floor can now be applied according to the coating garage floor instructions.  Using the flat paintbrush, apply on a testing floor area of your garage first.  Once desired result is achieved, you may now proceed with coating garage floor entirely, section per section, using your paint roller (medium size) and your paint tray.  Again, when coating garage floor, safety and protective gear will have to be worn throughout the coating garage floor.  Opening the garage door while coating garage floor will also help air out toxic vapors from the degreaser and coating garage floor that will be harmful to inhale.   Electric fans may also be used to air out toxic vapors from chemicals of coating garage floor and will help clear out the air from the coating garage floor.
